Senior Competitions

On Tuesday this week the Senior School hosted the West Regional Final of the English-Speaking Union Churchill Public Speaking Competition. Representing St Edward’s were Matthew A (Year 9), Issy P (Year 10) and Eliza D (Year 10). The other teams taking part were from Pate’s Grammar School and Prince Henry’s High School, Evesham.

The standard was incredibly high with all nine students performing to an excellent level.  Matthew, as the St Edward’s speaker, spoke eloquently on his topic of “The Government’s priority should be saving the environment”, highlighting the importance of having the Climate Emergency at the forefront of Government manifestos and policies. Alongside Matthew, Eliza and Issy were incredible, performing brilliantly in their roles as Chairman and Questioner respectively, demonstrating their skills in decorum, confidence and attention to detail.

At the end of the competition Pate’s was chosen by the judges as the winning team who now go to the Final at Churchill College, Cambridge. The St Edward’s Team was very unlucky not to have won, however, Eliza again won the Best Chairman Award. Congratulations to all three students, who will have gained an enormous amount from the experience.

Thank you also to Upper Sixth students Annabel S (timekeeper) and Mairead M and Rachel S for supporting the St Edward’s Team.
