Senior Design Technology

We were delighted to welcome over 90 Year 5 pupils to the Senior School on Thursday, to take part in a very special Tech Day!

The pupils joined us from a number of local Primary Schools including, Charlton King Junior School, Glenfall School and Grangefield School, as well as our own Prep School, to embark on a number of exciting technology-related challenges!

The pupils were split into groups of five, and their first task was to design and create a home-made pizza with the theme of ‘transport’. Their creations came to life, in a cloud of flour and laughter, with designs ranging from rockets to cars

Their next challenge, was to create a vehicle using a selection of materials, that would be able to hold two bags of rice whilst travelling. Furious hands scribbled ideas and lots of chatter filled the room, as the groups discussed what they wanted their creations to look like, what materials they would use to build them, and how they could use gravity to their advantage and stop air resistance. After 40 minutes of planning and design, they were off, with a 50 token budget, ready to make their vehicle come to life and win the top prizes.

Alongside the visiting Year 5 pupils, our very own Year 10 students, along with our Sixth Form students studying A Level Product Design, were on hand, giving advice to their younger peers, helping whenever they could and ensuring everyone was included in the exercises. Their confidence and collaborative nature shone through and teachers were impressed by the level of professionalism they displayed. Becoming ‘teacher’ can be a daunting task, but it was one that they relished, with fantastic results!

Once built, it was time to put the vehicles to the test in the day’s final challenge when the teams raced their vehicles against each other, with prizes given for “Longest Distance Travelled”, “Fastest Vehicle” and “Best Designed Vehicle”.

Well done to everyone involved in the day. As well as serving as a fantastic learning opportunity, it was also a great deal of fun for everyone who participated!
