This year, due to the challenges posed by COVID-19 it obviously meant that as a School we needed to think of a different way that the School community could come together and mark Armistice Day, an important tradition here at St Edward’s.
At the Senior School, a collective creative project was launched in October. The aim - to work collaboratively and creatively in these restrictive and challenging times to create an installation to honour the sacrifice made by so many.
The ‘Poppy Project’ was born! The school community and their families set to work either crafting handmade fabric or woollen poppies to form an installation in the Chapel, submitting messages to a digital book of remembrance, or preparing readings and musical performances.
All of the elements were collated into a 6-minute video, shown during an assembly in the week of Remembrance Day.
A huge success, the project was a welcome creative outlet for many of the children involved. Issy P (Year 9) said: “I really enjoyed doing some of the things for the Poppy Project that I didn’t think I would be able to do during this weird time. It was a really creative way to show respect on Remembrance Day.”
On Armistice Day itself, at Senior School there was a virtual Service of Remembrance before staff and students joined in with the two minute silence at 11:00am. Similarly the silence was also marked at the Prep School, along with a special assembly about the occasion.
