The Entry Process
St Edward’s School is a selective school and the intake profile, like other selective schools is above the national average. Consequently, pupils applying for places in Years 7 to 10 are required as part of our admission process to sit an Entrance Examination.
For Entry into Year 7
Once your child has registered, we will invite them to come into School and take our Year 7 Entrance Test. Children applying for Year 7 places would normally take the Entrance Test in the November preceding the year of entry, although it can be taken at any point during the year, if necessary.
The test for entry into Year 7 takes the form of an English Paper, a Mathematics Paper and a Non-Verbal Reasoning paper, each of which are 45 minutes in length. The papers will cover content we would have expected children to have studied at their current schools.
As well as the Entrance Test, we will also contact your child’s school for a School Reference and ask you to provide a copy of your child’s most recent School Report.
In addition all families are invited in for an individual meeting with our Headmaster, Matthew Burke.
Any offer of a place will be made following consideration of a child’s performance in the Entrance Test, the School Reference and School Report.
If all has gone well, you will receive an offer of a firm place at St Edward’s. We ask you to accept the place by paying a deposit which is refunded upon leaving the School once all financial matters have been cleared. When we receive your deposit, the place for your child is secured. Once we reach our cohort size limit, later acceptances will be put on the waiting list.
For Entry into Years 8, 9 or 10
Entrance to Years 8, 9 or 10 is by individual Entrance Examinations and depends on whether we have availability in the Year Group you require. We try to be flexible, but once a Year Group is full, we cannot increase class sizes to take extra pupils. We do not normally accept pupils into Year 11.
Children wishing to enter Years 8-10 entering Year 10 will be given an appropriate entrance assessment depending on the point of application, this could take the form of an online assessment or written papers in English and Mathematics.
We will also contact your child’s school for a School Reference and ask parents to provide a copy of their child’s most recent School Report. The School will consider performance in the Entrance Test, the School Reference and School Report before making an offer of a place.

For Entry into Sixth Form
Once your child has registered, we will invite them for an interview with the Headmaster. We will also contact your child’s school for a School Reference and ask you to provide a copy of your child’s most recent School Report.
It is preferable for pupils entering the Sixth Form to have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Level 5 or above and at least a Level 6 in subjects chosen for A Level. For Sciences and Maths a Level 7 or higher is recommended.
If your child fulfils the entrance criteria, you will receive an offer of a place at St Edward’s. We ask you to accept the place by paying a deposit which is refunded upon leaving the School once all financial matters have been cleared. When we receive your deposit, the place for your child is secured. Should your child not meet our entrance requirements following the publication of their GCSE results, please do have a conversation with the Admissions Manager as we may be able offer alternative arrangements. In the unfortunate event of an offer being withdrawn the School would refund your deposit.
