We are delighted to announce that St Edward’s, Cheltenham has been acquired by Alpha Schools, a leading UK Independent Schools Group. As part of the deal, Alpha have pledged to invest £3m in improving the school’s facilities.
Independent Schools have been hit with uncertainties following the impact of the pandemic. St Edward’s Trustees made the proactive step of reaching out to find the right partner with whom to strengthen the school. The acquisition by Alpha Schools provides a phenomenal opportunity for the school to thrive and prosper well into the future.
St Edward’s reputation and results has been growing since the arrival of new headmaster Matthew Burke. The enhanced facilities and influence of Alpha’s expertise in 11+ and IB will add to St Edward’s educational capital and only accelerate its upward trajectory.

Like us, Alpha Schools is committed to providing a happy environment in which pupils can meet and exceed academic expectations, developing their own unique individual gifts and talents. The Alpha team has as an impressive track record of helping similar schools to St Edward’s fulfil their potential. Of particular interest to our Board were the group’s expertise and success rates in 11+, GCSE and A Level examinations, along with the potential to work with other Alpha schools. I am confident St Edward’s will go from strength to strength under the stewardship of our hugely dedicated staff body, and the Alpha Team.
In addition to the guaranteed investment in the site, the sale provides the trust with additional funds to support new bursaries and scholarships for families who would not otherwise be able to afford a St Edward’s education.
