In their English lessons, Year 4 have been reading the adventure story ‘The Firework-Maker’s Daughter’ by Philip Pullman.

The class have been thoroughly enjoying the story and were excited to take the topic into their Drama lessons. The pupils relished the opportunity to step into the story and explore the characters in more depth. Working in pairs, they took turns depicting either the heroin of the story, Lila, or the intimidating Fire-Fiend Razvani.

Activities such as this are a fantastic way to encourage the pupils to empathise with the characters, to put themselves into different characters’ shoes and to really try and imagine how they must be feeling during key moments in the story.

At the end of the session the class reflected on how useful the task had been in expanding their knowledge of the story compared to relying solely on their imagination to bring the story to life.

Head of Drama, Mrs Dobson, was so impressed she awarded the entire class a House Point each!
