On Wednesday evening this week, two of our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Cadets, Mairead M and Matthew T (both Upper Sixth) were formally appointed as Gloucestershire’s Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets at a small official presentation.

The Lord Lieutenant supports military personnel in Gloucestershire: regulars, reserves and cadets. He provides an essential representative link between the military forces and the local community, raises awareness of the benefits and skills gained through part-time military service and assists with recruiting.

Every year the Lord Lieutenant appoints three Cadets from the Sea, Army and Air Cadets across the county to help him perform his duties.

The Cadets are selected in recognition of the outstanding example and devotion to duty they have displayed during their time in the CCF. As the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet, Mairead and Matthew will now be assisting the Lord Lieutenant in his duties over the next 12 months.

Our Principal, Matthew Burke, commented:

St Edward’s has had a cadet in this elite team for many years, but this year two of our outstanding Cadets were successful in being awarded this honour – so congratulations go to Mairead and Matthew and we wish them luck as they have the opportunity to accompany and support the Lord Lieutenant at key public events over the next year, including royal visits. We very much look forward to them sharing their experiences with us. Also at the presentation event, our very own SSgt Keylock, was also awarded a Meritorious Service certificate, marking 25 years of commitment to CCF. It is wonderful to see our staff acting as role models to our students and continually striving to improve themselves, as well as the students they take responsibility for. Congratulations to all three of them.

CCF at St Edward’s is an integral part of our co-curricular programme, with a large number of our students taking part in CCF activities after school and on the weekends. Being named as this year’s Lord Lieutenant’s Cadets is a huge honour for Mairead and Matthew and we are very proud of them as they take on their exciting new roles!
