In Year 9 Science, our students have been carrying out a required curriculum practical lesson to make soluble salts.
Soluble salts can be made by creating a reaction between an acid and a soluble, or insoluble reactant. For example, in this lesson, the students used sulphuric acid to react with copper(II) oxide powder, producing copper(II) sulphate.
The students combined the two components, until they could see that there was an excess of copper oxide powder. They then filtered the mixture to remove the un-reacted copper oxide before heating in a water bath. Adding heat makes the reaction faster and within the space of a lesson, each of the students had produced bright blue copper(II) sulphate crystals.
Our students relish the opportunity to get hands-on in their lessons, and Science is no exception!
