On Tuesday morning, Year 5 spent time in our dedicated Science Lab to conduct experiments involving changes of state, which are physical changes in matter. This could be melting, freezing, deposition, condensation, or evaporation.

The children added salt to cold water and warm water in turn, heated and cooled chocolate and sprayed foam from a can.

Before this practical lesson, Year 5 made predictions about each experiment and discussed whether they thought that the changes which occurred would be reversible or not. If the change is reversible, it means that the chemical make-up and therefore chemical properties of the substance have not changed.

With the information that they had gained by completing these experiments it meant that they were able to re-evaluate their predictions and understand why they were correct and incorrect.
