It was the turn of Year 3-6 pupils from St Edward’s Preparatory School to celebrate Christmas this week at their Candlelit Festival of Carols & Readings, held at St Mary’s Church in Charlton Kings.

It was a truly magical service, made even more so by the lighting of candles held by every member of the congregation, that rippled from the front of the Church right through to the back.

Following a welcome from Headmaster, Mr McKernan, Year 6 Pupil, Leo L opened the service playing the first verse of “Longing for Light” on his violin, before the rest of Year 6 began to sing, followed by the Choir and the congregation.

We then heard the first of a selection of readings from the Prophets and the Gospels, which took us through the story of mankind, leading up to the birth of Jesus. The first reading, from the Prophet Jeremiah, was delivered beautifully by Scarlett E and Ellis W.

Readings and prayers were presented throughout the Service by Year 6 pupils and their family members: Elliot A, Natasha B, David B, Bali B, Issy D and her Father, Rosie H and her mother, Daniel N and his father, Lily R and Clodagh T.

We also heard from the Prep Choir who sang John Rutter’s ‘Carol of the Children’ and Ruth Elaine Schram’s ‘Little Children Wake and Listen’. There were opportunities for the congregation to get involved with number of traditional congregational Christmas Carols, including ‘Once in Royal David’s City, with the first verse sung by Leila D.

Year 3 pupils played a very important role throughout the service providing a visual representation of the Nativity tableau, complementing the readings.

It was a beautiful service which brought the whole School community together and proved to be a fitting end to the Autumn Term.
