On Thursday we were excited to welcome 60 visiting Year 5 students (including the whole of Year 5 from the Prep School) to the Senior School to participate in the Year 5 Tech Day. During the day their design skills were put to the test as they worked in teams on two main projects.
Their first task was to design, and then make, a pizza in the shape of a mode of transport. The children really thought creatively about this with pizzas produced in a variety of shapes including a horse, a hot air balloon, a tank, a space ship and even a drone! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to eat their creations once they had been cooked to perfection!
The second task of the day was to design and build a buggy racer vehicle. Each group had to come up with a design and then “purchase” the items required to build it, after making a shopping list and working to a specific budget. Once built, it was time to put the vehicles to the test in the day’s final challenge when the teams raced their vehicles against each other, with prizes given for “Longest Distance Travelled”, “Fastest Buggy” and “Best Designed Buggy”.
The Year 5s were expertly supported throughout the day by our Year 10 Design and Technology students who used the benefit of their experience to help our visitors in their quest to bring their creations to life! It was really special to see the older students working alongside Year 5 and helping them to learn about the process of turning a design drawn on a page into something tangible.
