Pupils, staff and family from St Edward’s Prep School gathered on the Front Lawn of St Edward’s Senior School to celebrate Presentation Afternoon last Thursday. The purpose of the event was to recognise and reward the hard work and effort shown by the Prep pupils throughout the academic year, with the presentation of an array of well-deserved certificates and awards.

Proceedings began, in some glorious summer sunshine, with beautiful performances from both the Prep Choir and the Boy’s Choir who sang ‘Manx Lullaby’ and ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ respectively. They were followed by Dr Honeywell, our Chair of Trustees, who gave a short address of welcome.

Among the many guests present was the afternoon’s special guest speaker, Charlie Walker, a British adventurer, writer and motivational speaker. Charlie specialises in long distance, human-powered expeditions and has travelled by bicycle, foot, horse and dugout canoe. Charlie’s longest expedition was a 43,000-mile bicycle journey reaching the furthest cape in each of Europe, Asia and Africa before returning home. On this journey he traversed 60 countries, encountering extremes of weather, remoteness and physical exhaustion during the four and a half years he was away. We were delighted to hear him talk about this and a number of his other adventures when he addressed the audience. His message to our pupils was to always set personal goals and put full effort in working to achieve them.

Throughout the ceremony there were a number of further musical performances. The Year 6 Choir, taking part in their final Presentation Afternoon at St Edward’s Prep, sang ‘Together Forever, the year group’s favourite song from their end of year production ‘Madagascar: A Musical Adventure’. Solo performances came from Braeden in Year 6 who played ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ beautifully on the piano, along with Rosa, also in Year 6, who performed ‘L’Agréable’ from ‘Five Old French Dances’ on the oboe.

Certificates of Achievement were awarded to all pupils in Year 3 to Year 5, before subject and special awards were presented to pupils in Year 6. Following the conclusion of the presentations we heard from the Head Boy & Head Girl as they made their end of year speech and announced the names of the Head Boy & Head Girl for 2019/20.

Our Headmaster, Mr McKernan, brought the event to a close with some concluding remarks, before parents and guests joined staff on the Lawn to enjoy refreshments and mark the end of a very busy and successful year at St Edward’s Prep School.
