In the last week of the half term St Edward’s Prep School hosted five schools from around Cheltenham, on our all-weather running track, for the annual Olympic Torch Athletics event. The event saw pupils from Year 3 up to Year 6 competing for points for their respective schools.

Children from St Edward’s Prep School, Cheltenham College Prep, Prestbury St Mary’s, Bishop’s Cleeve Primary and Gotherington Primary gathered to participate in the ninth edition of the event.

After an opening lap including all of the participants, a tradition that has been maintained after one of the Olympic Torches was carried around in the first competition in 2011, the action was underway with the long distance races taking place first.

Following some very competitive 300m and 600m races, Cheltenham College Prep led the way on 71 points, closely followed in second by St Edward’s on 63 points.

The sprint races were even closer, and with our line judges being made to work hard to ensure that the races were adjudged correctly, Prestbury St Mary’s came from behind to take the overall lead, nine points ahead of our brilliant St Edward’s runners.

Finally there were the relay races, where the current leaders, Prestbury, were able to maintain their slight lead over St Edward’s to seal the overall victory.

Congratulations to all of the children, who competed hard but respectfully, completely encapsulating the essence of the competition, trying their best and doing themselves proud.
