St Edward’s Senior B Team scored with the final kick of the match to seal victory against Hereford Cathedral School in a hotly contested home match this week.
Both teams struggled to get a foothold in the game throughout, but Hereford started the game stronger, hitting the crossbar in the opening stages, before taking the lead midway through the first-half. Going behind did not dampen St Edward’s morale and, before the break, they saw themselves level after a good pass through on goal was converted by the striker, Sam, enabling St Edward’s to go into the second period at 1-1.
The second half continued in the same pattern as the first, with the away team hitting the woodwork again twice before the midway point in the second half. A period of fragmented play followed for the final 10 minutes of the match, where fatigue had perhaps set in to both teams’ players, causing some disruption and stoppages in play for late tackles and fouls.
There was still time for a winner, however, with the time in the game ticking down to its final few seconds. Sam was once again released in behind the opposition defence and managed to keep his composure to slot the ball into the ‘keeper’s near post.
The final whistle immediately followed and although St Edward’s rode their luck at times, they were able to seal the 2-1 victory.
