We were delighted to welcome over 30 children to St Edward’s Senior School on Friday when they attended our Year 3- 6 Music Experience Day. The children joined us from a variety of local Schools including Airthrie School, The Catholic School of St Gregory the Great, The Richard Pate School. Hopelands School, Glenfall Community Primary School, St Gregory’s Childcare Trust and St James’ CofE Primary School.
The day was themed around Calypso music, and the children spent time learning two Calypso songs: “Benjamin Calypso” from “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and a traditional Jamaican song, “Jamaica Farewell”. The group were challenged to sing in two-part harmony which they managed to master in a very short space of time, with some of the participants bravely volunteering to take on the solo parts!
During the day the group practised two orchestra pieces, again based on the Calypso theme, “Yellow Bird” and “Calypso Blue”, which were arranged by Mrs Pope, the Senior School’s Director of Music. Also, with the help of the St Edward’s Senior School Music Scholars, the children had a go at composing their own short Calypso pieces using percussion instruments, for which creativity was definitely key!
The day culminated in a fabulous concert, allowing the children to share the results of this wonderful day of music with their families.
