European Lunch for Yr 9 |

On Wednesday 29th June all the Year 9 pupils took part in a European Lunch. This meant that they had to get into groups, choose a country, and work on preparing some background information on that country, food and suitable table decorations.

The Languages Department were very impressed with the effort that most of the pupils had put in, and we had tables from many different European countries, including: England, Luxembourg, Spain, Norway, Italy, France, Greece, Austria, Sweden, Portugal and Turkey.

Choosing winners was very difficult and we had several Highly Commended tables and winners for each of the 3 main categories. However, the " Italy" table of Tim Pickering, Toby Morris, Pietro Gribaudi, James Weatherly, Christian Francis and Matthew Claypole won the overall prize. Many congratulations to them for all their hard work! |

Tewkesbury Abbey Visit

Two glorious June days happened to fall on each of the days for our walking pilgrimage to Tewkesbury Abbey. Monday was if anything too hot, Thursday was just right. After a coach journey from school to the Haw Bridge we began out walk along the banks of the River Severn, we were told about the significance of rivers for movement of people, armies and crops in ancient times. After about 40 minutes we arrived at Deerhurst village for our first break.

We visited the ancient Deerhurst Church and had talks about some of the architectural features of this wonderful building and then on to Odda’s Chapel. We started to walk again and eventually passed the scene of the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471. We continued to Tewkesbury Abbey for lunch and a tour of the building. It was fascinating to see the nave of the building upside down and it was really clearly shaped like the hull of a boat (navis in Latin) - see the deliberately upside down picture to the right.
. |

We carried on and Fr Basil gave us a wonderful talk about two modern stained glass windows and revealed to us the messages that were contained within them. After a short visit to the Lady Chapel we caught the bus back to school. It was a wonderful day, thank you Fr Basil. |
