Yr 7 Win Cheltenham and District Hockey Tournament |

After an impressive first Hockey season for the Yr 7 squad, the team went into the District Tournament with lots of confidence. The first match in the pool stages was against Pittville; St Edward’s began slowly but persevered and were rewarded with a well-taken first goal from Captain, Georgie Baillie-Hamilton. Excellent work in both attacking and defending from Rose Jones, in centre midfield, allowed St Edward’s to become dominant, and the game finished 2-0. St Edward’s played Balcarras second, and this match proved to be more of a challenge. Good marking in defence, from Georgie Brazington and Isabella Jones, gave St Edward’s structure and stopped Balcarras having too many chances. Julia McLaughlin was outstanding in goal throughout, and even saved a sure goal with her helmet! Lauren Dudluke and Izzy Skinner made excellent contributions in defence, and numerous good chances in attack. A draw was enough to keep us at the top of the table and go into the final pool game with confidence. A 2-0 win over Cotswold School secured a semi spot for St Edward’s to the delight of the parents in the crowd.

The semi-final was against Chosen Hill; this turned out to be an end-to-end hockey game with chances from both teams not being converted into goals. Alice Holland and Helena Wotruba linked some excellent passes together, and were denied by good goal-keeping from the Chosen Hill goalie. Alice Holland sustained an injury near the end of the match but happily felt able to continue. The stalemate continued; but as St Edward’s had won three short corners during the game and Chosen Hill had not had any, St Edward’s went through to the Final.
The Final was a replica of last year’s; St Edward’s v Pate’s. The St Edward’s team was nervous, but knew that they had the ability to win. An excellent start saw them go into the lead through another Georgie Baillie-Hamilton goal, and Julia McLaughlin made at least three excellent saves to keep them ahead. St Edward’s kept up the pressure on the Pate’s defence and converted two more goals to win 3-0 to the cheers of the watching crowd. Congratulations Yr 7 Hockey Team!!!

Carol Service at Tewkesbury Abbey |
Students, staff, parents and friends gathered once again at Tewkesbury Abbey on Monday 12th December for the School’s annual Carol Service. St Edward’s was welcomed to the Abbey by the Rev Charles Whitney who also gave the Opening Prayer. |

There were individual contributions from both the School Choirs, and the Chamber Choir’s included Verbum caro by John Gibbons, which had been commissioned by the School for the Service. Readings were by students from all Years.

Four Sixth Form boys were Altar Servers, and Fr Basil read the Gospel and delivered the Concluding Prayers. The School’s Organist, Mr Ian Higginson, accompanied at the organ and piano.

The singing, directed by Mr Bryant and Mrs Taylor, was stunning throughout, and despite the appalling weather conditions the congregation, who had joined in several of the Carols, left the Abbey with the joy of Christmas in their hearts.

Varsity Match Trip
Forty boys from Yrs 8, 9 and 10 travelled by coach to Twickenham on Thursday 8th December to watch the Varsity Match between Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The boys enjoyed a great day out and an impressive game of Rugby at the RFU Headquarters.

The looming stadium, which seats more than 80,000, was all decked out in light and dark blue to support the two teams, and the boys picked their allegiance and joined in. We even had time to meet up with a past St Edward's pupil who is currently a student at Cambridge University.

Maths Puzzle |

Unfortunately, there were no correct entries for last month’s puzzle – Three Way Mix Up. You had to remember that you didn't necessarily need one tile of each colour in every row and column - it was just that tiles of the same colour weren't allowed to touch. There were thirty six different ways altogether. Good luck with December’s puzzle!
Remember that every correct entry will receive a House Point, and the winner will receive a Commendation Card or equivalent.
All entries should be handed in to me or your Maths teacher by Friday, 6th January, 2012. |

Informal Concert

Monday 28th November
This was a fantastic concert and a lovely way to end a busy day. Ellie Harding (Yr8) started us off with a confident performance of Clockwork Doll which was then followed by a carefully prepared duet from Megan Chadwick and Jennifer Statham (Yr11). There were further duets in the concert from Charlie Donaldson (Yr10) and Mr Sallis as well as from Jonathan Fan (Yr11) and his teacher, Dr Honeywill. |

Several students gave their debut performances with great aplomb: Helene Wotruba (Yr7) and Jennie Hill (L6 th) with beautiful performances on the flute; Matt Mycoe (Yr10) on drums; and even Mr Todd joined in by singing, The people that walked in darkness, from Handel’s Messiah.
There were exciting performances from some of our regular performers James Reynolds (Yr9), and George Watson (Yr8), and many excellent performances from some of our less frequent performers.
Dominic Alden (Yr10), Sam Sayers (U6 th) JJ Rudge (L6 th), David Cullimore (U6 th), Amelia Wreford (U6 th), Oli Pickering (L6 th), and Dan Lewis (L6 th) all gave scintillating performances to conclude this thoroughly enjoyable concert. Congratulations to all performers for such a superb evening of music. |

Geography Quiz 2011 |

On Friday 5th December the St Edward's Geography Society hosted the annual Geography Christmas Quiz.

The event was our best yet with fantastic competition across the Year Groups. There were over one hundred and twenty competitors in the twenty-one teams. Each team represented its House, and the Drama Studio was a hive of excitement and activity. Newman House scored the most points, and as such was crowned the Geography Quiz Champions 2011.

Many thanks to all of the Society members for both composing and marking the quiz, and even more thanks to Imogen Parnham, the new President, who had the hardest job of all as the Quiz Host. |

Ice Cake Competition

Christmas Lunch |
A turkey dinner with all the trimmings and a variety of puddings was enjoyed by students and staff on Tuesday. Crackers were distributed and pulled, with jokes old and new being booed or cheered! Many thanks to Tony Berry and the Refectory staff for producing the splendid meal. For the occasion they drafted in some extra staff to help serve (see photos below)!
