Spanish

Spanish is first studied by all pupils in Year 8 where we use the ¡Listos 1! textbook. In Year 10 pupils may opt to take Spanish for GCSE where the OCR syllabus is followed. Pupils are examined on the four skills - listening, reading, speaking and writing, the latter being coursework completed by the Easter of Year 11. Pupils are entered either for just Foundation Tier, just Higher Tier or a mixture of the two. The Coursebook used is ¡Listos 3!. Results at GCSE are as high as those in French.

For AS and A2, the course book used is Ponte al Día. The OCR syllabus is followed again. Both years involve the taking of 3 modules - speaking and listening, reading and writing, and Culture and Society which is usually coursework. The latter allows for the study of literary or non-literary topics and texts. Students are encouraged to spend time in Spain during the course and there is a study visit to Spain, near Valencia for Year 10 to U6th students, which has proved highly successful. In addition to their six lessons per week, students have a conversation class in pairs of threes with the Spanish language Assistant. Results are excellent with all students gaining A-C grades over the past five years.
