Mathematics

It is essential to engage students' interest in mathematics if we are to develop their thinking to be structured and logical. This is not only a skill for life but is a vital part of every student's intellectual development. We use ICT as an integral part of our Maths teaching. Computers can now do many mathematical tasks for us, but technology does not help if you do not have a plan. Maths is all about thinking clearly.

So we aim to:
- stimulate and maintain students' curiosity, interest and enjoyment of mathematics
- develop their familiarity with mathematical concepts, principles, methods and vocabulary and their understanding of how maths relates to other subject areas and the wider world
- encourage them to develop personal qualities such as politeness, perseverance, initiative, empathy, self-confidence and independence through both independent and group work
- help them to develop transferable skills and informed opinions about their mathematics which they can support with reasoned arguments.

Exams
Our top Set now take IGCSE Maths which is more challenging than the ordinary GCSE and a better preparation for A-level.
At A-level our students usually fall within the A-B bands and failure is rare. Further Maths is taken by a number of students.

Every year we take part in the UK Maths Challenge, and our students regularly win certificates. Our regular Puzzle Club is very popular, and the Maths Department is home to the school's thriving Chess Club.
