German
German is studied by all pupils in Year 9, and then in Year 10 pupils may opt to continue it to GCSE where the OCR syllabus is followed which is based on the four skills - listening, reading, speaking and writing. Most pupils are entered for the Higher Tier, some for the Foundation Tier, and some for a mixture of the two. The Coursebooks used are Logo 4 (Year 10) and Lernpunkt 3 (Year 11). We have a school trip to Germany in the form of an exchange with a school near Berlin. Results at GCSE are as high as those in French.
For AS and A2, the course book used is Brennpunkt. The OCR syllabus is followed again. Both years involve taking modules - speaking and listening, reading and writing, and Culture and Society which is usually coursework. The latter allows for the study of literary or non-literary topics and texts. Students are encouraged to spend time in Germany during the course. Students have a weekly conversation class in pairs with the German Language Assistant. Once again, results are pleasing with the majority of students gaining A-C grades.
