Chess is very popular at St.Edward's. Lunchtime clubs are held twice a week, open to all students. On Thursday evenings, The Edwardians Club takes place, in which present and past students, staff members, family and friends play. Edwardians field two teams in the North Gloucestershire League, one in Division Two and the other in Division Three.

The annual Staff v Students match is always hotly contested. This year it was played over 49 boards and resulted in a win for the Students by 30 to 19.

Each year our students compete in the UK Land Chess Challenge. In 2008, thirteen of our players qualified for the county megafinal, which was hosted by St Edward's and organised by St Edward's parent Mr Cliff Carter. Alex Carter became the Gloucestershire Under 14 Boys Champion. He and Ed Broom qualified for the gigafinal. As usual St Edward's hosted the Cotswold Chess Congess which was again won by IM Chris Beaumont.

Edwardians also take part in the North Gloucestershire KO Tournament, competing for the Peter Harrison Trophy, named in memory of the Old Edwardian who instigated the tournament in its present form.
