St Edward’s U11A (3) 7 Charlton Kings (0) 1

The U11A played their first Cheltenham and District Primary League match this week and eased to a comfortable win – a very pleasing performance in many ways. There was some very fluent and slick passing and assured finishing with goals coming from CONNOR CASEY (hat-trick), TOMMATRAVERS (brace), JACOB PICKERING and HARVEY COLLINS, who recovered well after leaving the field of play in the first minute through injury. The defence was generally solid although JOEY CLABBON was called upon to make several fine saves in the second half.

Squad: JOEY CLABBON, MICHAEL BOYD, KIRTLAND PINCOTT, PETER CARTER, TOM MATRAVERS, JACOB PICKERING, CONNOR CASEY, HARVEY COLLINS, GEORGE DIMOPOULOS, PATRICK LEWIS.

The B team was edged out by a strong Charlton Kings team with TOBY ELLIOTT scoring the only goal – final score:- St Edward’s 1, Charlton Kings 3

Squad: MYLES MCSWINEY, ANDREW BRIDGER, ANDREW BERRAGAN, TOBY ELLIOTT, ALEX ASCHAM, LUKE PICKERING, ARDAN DEVINE, JONATHAN DOWIE, KIT ROOKE, CALLUM ANDERSON, JAIME RICOTE, JAKOB MUDD.

Next week there is a League fixture for the U11A away at Naunton Park on Tuesday October 7 th (3.45pm) – the Football Club will run but will be inside and for Year 6 boys only.

RUGBY

There are two fixtures before half-term:-

Wednesday October 8th v Berkhampstead (away) – 4pm

Wednesday October 15th v Hatherop Castle (away) – 2.30pm

Therefore there will be no Rugby Club on those days – there is also a fixture immediately after half-term against Cheltenham College B on November 5th, so no club on that day either.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Cheltenham and District League starts next week with the first of FIVE races at The Patesians Sports and Social Club (formerly Old Pats), Everest Road on Thursday October 9 th. The Girls race will be first at 4.15pm followed by the Boys at around 4.40 pm and the course is about one and a quarter miles long.

There is a second race the following week , October 16 th, here at St Edward’s so there will be no cross country clubs on either of those days.

There are three trophies up for grabs – Girls Individual, Boys individual and the Combined and we are holders of the latter two from last year with Leckhampton winners of the Girls in March this year.

HOCKEY

On Wednesday afternoon 25 Year 5 girls competed in friendly matches against King’s Junior School, Gloucester. Our girls were very excited, many of whom were playing in their first match of the season. Both teams performed extremely well, in evenly matched and hard fought games.

U10 A/B TEAM

St. Edward’s captain, SOPHIE BAILLIE-HAMILTON, won the toss and decided to take first push back. We started the match a little apprehensively, chasing after the ball instead of using the space. The girls soon realized that they had to up the pressure and start to display those all-important accurate and strong passes, using all attackers and the pitch to our advantage. The girls began to show some good passing between forwards, ELEANOR FINDLAY, JULIETTE LAMDEN, ISABEL TINKLER and SOPHIE BAILLIE-HAMILTON but, unfortunately, even with quite a few attempts on goal, this was not enough to score.

LOUISE LOVATT, LIBERTY WHITTAKER, LILY STEWART and LUCY ROPER supported our attackers by coming out of the ‘D’ and defending the goal very well and a great save from CHARLOTTE BURFOOT ended the first half 0 – 0.

During the second half, the team continued to battle hard, spacing out better and creating good goal opportunities. All girls showed pace and strength when running with the ball and put in a number of very strong tackles. All the defenders worked tirelessly feeding the ball forward for ISOBEL McGREGOR-BRAVO, JEMMA ROBSON, SOPHIE WHITEHEAD, JULIETTE LAMDEN and ELEANOR FINDLAY to create a number of shots on goal. The girls, working exceptionally well as a team, upped the pressure even more and an own goal was scored as well as one by a delighted JEMMA ROBSON.

This excellent display of teamwork and super hockey secured a 2-0 win to St. Edward’s. Congratulations to all of the team.

U10 B/C TEAM

St. Edward’s began well with JENNY LAWTON intercepting the King’s push back. The forward line of KIERA BARRY, AMY MAIDEN and CHARLEEN DUNN worked hard to penetrate the King’s defence, yet could not find a way through. Both MIRIAM CLARKE and MIA LANGSBURY read the game well in defence, tackling hard and sweeping the ball out wide. A couple of good saves in goal from HOLLY GILLON ensured the score remained 0 – 0 at half time.

Again St. Edward’s started strongly in the second half. ANNABEL HOOPER fought hard in the centre half position, working the ball forwards effectively. SOPHIE CASTELLANI displayed good pace on the right wing, passing the ball beautifully across to both AMY MAIDEN and EMMA HAYWARD in the attacking D. ELISHA PRIVETT and NIAMH OSMAN proved solid in defence making a number of excellent tackles and clearances. Despite this hard work in defence and some careful keeping from CHLOE McDONALD, King’s managed to go 1 goal ahead. St. Edward’s continued to pile on the pressure and were unlucky not to equalize, with a disallowed goal from AMY MAIDEN.

A closely fought game finally finished 1 – 0 to King’s. Well done to all involved!
