Infant Department
Infant
The Infant Department benefits from the forty acres of parkland in which the school is set. The department staff value the role of parents and works closely with them to develop a successful two-way flow of information, knowledge and expertise.
In ‘Reception’ we build on the knowledge and skills learnt in Kindergarten and offer a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum following the Early Years Foundation Stage to ensure that all children feel included, secured and valued.
This is based on six key areas of learning.
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Communication, language and literacy
- Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
- Knowledge and understanding of the world
- Physical development
- Creative development ‘
The staff’s professionalism, combined with good adult to child ratios, supports each child’s needs well, and results in outstanding personal development.’ (ISI Interim inspection 2009)
The curriculum in Year One is designed to progress smoothly from the Foundation Stage. It extends the children academically whilst ensuring breadth and balance in the activities on offer. They are encouraged to make their own decisions and to work independently. The children study a range of topics, which are linked to the National Curriculum.
‘The high expectations of the staff and their reinforcement of the ‘golden rules’ result in children’s exemplary behaviour.’ ISI Interim inspection 2009)
The children in Year Two follow a curriculum, which extends beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum to provide an exciting and interesting year. They are encouraged to do personal research for topics, using both books and computer resources.
During their Year Two year the children will be encouraged to become very much more independent in both work and individual personal responsibility. The wide range of activities provided by fully qualified staff in a well-structured day enables each child to reach his or her own potential.
Our wonderful grounds, in addition to our well-equipped, bright, and cheerful classrooms provide an ideal learning environment for the children.
Choosing the right setting for your child can be a very difficult decision and so we invite you to come and experience St Edward's infant department for yourselves.
