Headmaster's Letter

Weekly Ethos Message: 'Being Peaceful in Friendships'.

We focussed this week on being peaceful in our friendships with each other. The children in our Infant Department enjoyed an assembly on images of friendship and shared ways of overcoming difficulties in friendship matters. In the Junior Deparment Rev Garland from St Mary's Church of England led a liturgy assembly related to the conversion of St Paul and the road that he took towards being peaceful.

The Year 4 assembly greatly supported by a high parental attendance highlighted the Beatitudes in relation to Roahl Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory story and the values of meekness and humility.

Breakfast Club

A reminder that I require one week's notice if you would like your child to attend Breakfast Club, in order that preparations can be made. Please e-mail Mrs Williams on mainoffice@stedwardsjunior.co.uk if you would like to make a booking. Thank you.

Enjoy your weekend!

Cookery - Bread Making

Members of the Y6 group of children doing cookery as part of their Technology studies were treated to a wonderful session by Mrs Ford, (mum of Jack, Tom and Martha) on Thursday 26th January. Mrs Ford is an expert in bread making and conducted an extremely informative and hands on bread making lesson. The children and I enjoyed every minute and I have invited Mrs Ford again over the next few weeks so that we can learn even more about this wonderful skill.

Thank you very much Mrs Ford!

Quantum Theatre visit

On Tuesday afternoon, the Junior School were treated to an afternoon of Science from Quantum Theatre ‘Inspector Clueless and the Missing Materials’. We learnt all about the properties of materials, the three states of matter – solids, liquids, gases and found out about mixtures and compounds.

All the children had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

Football

On Wednesday, St Edward’s played six matches at Hatherop Castle with the honours shared with three wins apiece. Well done to all boys, especially those competing in their first ever match:-

  • Hatherop U11A 4, St Edward’s U11B 0

Hatherop were too strong this time round and St Edward’s spent most of the game defending their goal and finding it difficult to break out.

Squad: WILL BONEHILL, MAX RICHARDSON, JAMES GOATLEY, FRED TINKLER, LOUIS RIGAULT, THOMAS FIELDING, ALEX ANDREWS, SAMI EMIR, JACK RATCLIFFE.

  • Hatherop U11B 0, St Edward’s U11C 1

TOM LYTHGOE scrambled a second half winner as St Edward’s secured a battling victory.

Squad: JAMES WATSON, HARRISON GATES, JAMES FLETCHER, CAELLUM AND GWILLYM DONAGHY, JON WEBSTER, TOM LYTHGOE, JOSHUA EMPSON, DAVID JACKSON.

  • Hatherop U9A (0) 3, St Edward’s U9A/B (0) 1

CIARAN STRANACK netted from the spot and a mixed St Edward’s side played well despite losing to a strong Hatherop side.

SQUAD: EDWARD GARDNER, MATTHEW DAVIES, PABLO VEGA, JAMIE LYTHGOE, CIARAN STRANACK, GEORGE CLARKE, SAM GERACITANO.

  • Hatherop U9B 2, St Edward’s U9B/C 1

JAMES FINDLAY gave St Edward’s the lead but, despite strong defensive performances from SAM GIBSON, OLIVER SANDERS and JUDE SHULDHAM-LEGH, they couldn’t quite hold on and slipped to a narrow defeat.

Squad: SAM GIBSON, JAMES FINDLAY, ARCHIE TAYLOR, TYLER MOESSING, OLIVER SANDERS, JUDE SHULDHAM-LEGH, CONOR STEELE, BEN WEST.

  • Hatherop U8A (1) 1, St Edward’s U8A/B (0) 2

A last gasp winner from EDDIE STEVENS gave St Edward’s a hard earned win and completed a fine comeback after falling behind early in the match. ALVARO PEIRO had a solid game in goal, DANIEL WHEATLEY made some strong tackles and ALISTAIR CLARKE scored the equalizing goal.

Squad: BEN PURVEY, ALVARO PEIRO, JOHN CONNELLY, DANIEL WHEATLEY, ALISTAIR CLARKE, EDDIE STEVENS.

  • Hatherop U8B 0, St Edward’s U8B/C (2) 4

MAX ATTWOOD scored a hat-trick with HARVEY WOOD scoring the fourth as St Edward’s recorded a convincing victory. HUNTER BUCKLEY did well at the back to thwart several Hatherop breakaways but all players did really well.

Netball

On Wednesday afternoon, U10A and B netball teams played in friendly matches against Cheltenham College Junior School. Both teams fought hard in the cold and windy conditions, against tough opposition, producing two good matches.

U10B Team

Both teams fought hard to gain possession in the opening quarter, taking time to settle into their positions. Great marking from St Edward’s, only allowed Cheltenham College to score once. Despite good movement in the centre third from MAISY PROSSER, ZOE HANKS, SARA O’KELLY and GEMMA McKERNAN, Cheltenham College increased their lead to 4 - 0 at half time.

St Edward’s gave an improved performance in the third quarter. Both ROBIN CHERRY and CAOIMHE MOONEY made good dodges, but were marked tightly by their defenders. LAUREN DUFFY and EMMA ROBINSON made good interceptions and stuck with their partners tightly in the circle, therefore, only allowing one further goal to be scored. St Edward’s displayed tired legs in the final quarter. However, with Cheltenham College finally proving too strong, winning 9 - 0. Well done girls, this score line really didn’t reflect the effort and hard work you all put in!

Star Player: LAUREN DUFFY

Team List: ROBIN CHERRY, CAOIMHE MOONEY, GEMMA McKERNAN, MAISY PROSSER, ZOE HANKS, SARA O’KELLY, EMMA ROBINSON, LAUREN DUFFY.

U10A Team

The whole team displayed some great footwork and super passing. St. Edward’s marked tightly and made it particularly difficult for Cheltenham College to get free. Great defending and some super interceptions were made by DAISY MANUEL, MILLIE BOURKE and ADRIANA SANCHEZ. At the end of the first half, Cheltenham College were just slightly ahead, winning 4 - 3.

This made St. Edward’s even more determined. REGI RISTIC-NORTH, at C, linked well with IRIA PEIRO, at WA, to pass the ball accurately into our attacking ‘D’. Super movement from LAUREN GARFIELD and quick, sharp passes from FAYE BAKER rewarded the team with 3 further goals. This great determination meant that the final score was 6 - 6, a very fair result!

Star Player: as voted for by Cheltenham College – REGI RISTIC-NORTH

Team List: FAYE BAKER, MILLIE BOURKE, LAUREN GARFIELD, DAISY MANUEL, IRIA PEIRO, REGI RISTIC-NORTH, ADRIANA SANCHEZ.
