Welcome to our Library. With an impressive collection of over 13,000 books, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Many of our books are non-fiction, chosen to support the curriculum work and extend and deepen knowledge. The Library holds the standard reference works such as encyclopaedias and dictionaries, and also takes a wide range of magazines, periodicals and newspapers, ensuring that pupils have the opportunity to keep up to date in their studies and current affairs.
To supplement this, we have computer and internet access available for research and homework. A user-friendly computerised catalogue system is available both in the Library and across the school network ensuring easy access to Library stock.
The Library is open throughout the school day. Pupils can use it during break and lunchtime, and it is available for sixth-form study throughout the day. Classes across the curriculum use the Library for research purposes during lesson time.
The Librarian encourages pupils to read from the Library's wide-ranging collection of classic and contemporary fiction, for enjoyment and for their intellectual development. Reading classes are held weekly for Years 7 - 9 who all participate in a Reading Challenge.
The Librarian is involved in supporting Information Literacy programmes at various stages in school life: pupils gradually become familiar with sources of information and learn how to assess the reliability of their sources and record these systematically. This begins with the Year 7 Induction Programme at the start of the school year.
Reading for pleasure
The Librarian organises various events throughout the year to foster the enjoyment of books and the written word, including an annual Carnegie Shadowing Group assessing the shortlist for the Carnegie Medal, author visits, a celebration of World Book Day and participation in writing competitions.
