Application Process

We would encourage you to visit our School at any time. To arrange a visit please contact Mrs Anthea Dufour, the Admissions Manager.

You are warmly invited to join us on one of our Open Days. Do please arrive at Reception where the Headmistress and Senior Management Team will greet you and arrange for some of our pupils to show you around the School. This is a normal school day and you will be able to see the pupils during their lessons taking part in the usual school routine. Refreshments are available in the Headmistress’s study and there will be printed material on display for you to take away with you. We hope this visit will arm you with answers to any queries you may have about your child's future education at the School.

St Edward’s School is a selective school and the intake profile, like other selective schools is above the national average.  Consequently, pupils applying for places in Years 7 to 10 are required as part of our admission process to sit an Entrance Examination.

For entry to Year 7

Once your child has registered, we will invite them to come into School and take our on-line Entrance Examination.  Children applying for Year 7 places would normally take the Entrance Examination in the November preceding the year of entry, although this Entrance Examination can be taken at any point during the year, if necessary.

The examination, for entry into Year 7 is a computer-based test run by the CEM Centre at Durham University which will test a child’s ability to learn and make progress.  The test does not require a pupil to revise as it does not test knowledge, but a child’s aptitude.  A familiarisation test can be accessed here for children to try out the test prior to examination day.*

We will also contact your child’s school for a School Reference and also ask parents to provide a copy of their child’s most recent School Report.  The School will consider performance in the Entrance Examination, the School Reference and School Report before making an offer of a place.

If all has gone well, you will receive an offer of a firm place at St Edward's. We ask you to accept the place by paying a £450 deposit (for entry during 2017-2018), which is refunded upon leaving the School once all financial matters have been cleared. When we receive your deposit, the place for your child is secured. Once we reach our cohort size limit, later acceptances will be put on the waiting list.

For entry to Years 8, 9 or 10

Entrance to Years 8, 9 or 10 is by individual Entrance Examinations and depends on whether we have availability in the Year Group you require. We try to be flexible, but once a Year Group is full, we cannot increase class sizes to take extra pupils. We do not normally accept pupils into Year 11.

The examination, for entry into Years 8 and 9 is a computer-based test run by the CEM Centre at Durham University which will test a child’s ability to learn and make progress.  The test does not require a pupil to revise as it does not test knowledge, but a child’s aptitude.  A familiarisation test can be accessed here for children to try out the test prior to examination day.*

Children entering Year 10 will be given an appropriate entrance assessment depending on the point of application, this could take the form of an online assessment or written papers in English and Mathematics.

We will also contact your child’s school for a School Reference and ask parents to provide a copy of their child’s most recent School Report.  The School will consider performance in the Entrance Test, the School Reference and School Report before making an offer of a place.

For entry to Sixth Form

Provisional places are offered in the Sixth Form based on interview, a satisfactory School Reference and predicted grades which are in line or exceed our threshold for A Level study.  Pupils entering the Sixth Form must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at levels 9 to 5 (grades A*-C) including Mathematics and English.  To study the Sciences and Mathematics at A Level, a level 7 or higher is strongly recommended.

If your child fulfils the entrance criteria, you will receive an offer of a place at St Edward's. We ask you to accept the place by paying a £450 deposit (for entry during 2017-2018), which is refunded upon leaving the School once all financial matters have been cleared. When we receive your deposit, the place for your child is secured.  Should your child not meet our entrance requirements following the publication of their GCSE results, the School would refund your deposit.
